Friends of Peartree Green

Welcome to our website!

Peartree Green Local Nature Reserve is a diverse habitat of 20.8 hectares (51.4 acres) on the eastern bank of the River Itchen in Southampton, with mixed chalk and acid grasslands, scrub and woodlands, bordered on its western side by the Southampton to Portsmouth railway line and surrounded on its northern, eastern and southern sides by the residential suburb of Peartree Green.

The Friends of Peartree Green are a group of volunteers who help to maintain Peartree Green as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) for the benefit of wildlife, the local community, and the wider city of Southampton. Peartree Green has enjoyed its status as a designated LNR since 2017, and in 2023 the nature reserve received a Green Flag Award in recognition of its environmental and community value.

Together with the landowner, Southampton City Council, the Friends of Peartree Green help to implement the long-term LNR management strategy. We also run a wide range of educational, conservation and recreational activities and events throughout the year, as well as helping to maintain accessibility to the site and keeping it clean and tidy. The work of the Friends of Peartree Green was acknowledged in the first Wilder Awards in 2021.

Southampton is very fortunate among UK cities in having a large proportion of green spaces, with over 70 managed wild areas including three LNRs and eight Greenways, as well as many voluntary community groups who help to manage these (see our links page). Southampton's green spaces, including Peartree Green, collectively make up important wildlife corridors and refuges for some uncommon and vulnerable species, as well as providing a wide range of recreational areas for people (and dogs!).

This website aims to provide information that we hope you will find useful, including some background on the history of Peartree Green LNR, why it is unique as a habitat for wildlife, a list of our forthcoming events, an archive of past events, and photos and species lists of the wildlife seen here. We are keen to receive feedback, so do tell us if there are further website items you would like to see included and do please send us any photos that you would like featured. And, of course, you are very welcome to join us, as an occasional volunteer on specific tasks or a longer-term member of the Friends team.

Peartree Green LNR is near to Woolston Railway Station and the Itchen Bridge. For directions and a summary of the facilities available please see our Maps & Directions page.
